How to correctly determine the width of the grouting seam

Recommendations and rules when choosing a width of the grouting seam

The width of the grouting seam is determined depending on personal preferences. For some people, narrow seams are optimal, but for others – on the contrary, the wider the better. But it is worth remembering that very wide seams spoil the appearance, suppressing the tile itself. If the mosaic tile has a width of 10 to 60 centimeters, then in this case a 3-mm seam is suitable. If the laid tile has an irregular shape, then this moment can be hidden by a wide seam, but not more than 12 millimeters. Wide seams are not convenient for them to crack faster. If you make a seam of more than 12 millimeters, then you can fix it by adding coarse -grained sand to a solution.

But this does not always help. The seam can crack not only because of a large width. If you add a lot of liquids to the solution, then the seams will also crack. But you should not do very narrow seams, since the grout penetrates with difficulty. This can entail the penetration of moisture into the inside of the floor cladding. Experts recommend making such seams that an acrylic or latex grout can penetrate them. Thus, not only the tightness of the coating is achieved, but the shock absorber is created in case of changing the width of the tile. To do this, you need to make seams more than 1 millimeter.
